Present: Marvin Erickson, chairman, William Garens, Richard
Anderson, Terry Fields, Robert Lieb, Frances Blacklock;
Marty Jessen, park and recreation director, Gretchen

I. Minutes M/Lieb, S/Garens that the minutes of April 12 be approved
corrected to read that Robert Lieb was present. Carried.
II. Recommendations and Reports
A. Agency Erickson asked for an alternate to attend the SRA meeting
Liason May 13. Anderson will go.
Reports
Erickson said Little League expects one of their best seasons and
commended Jessen for his great cooperation. Pop and candy stands
will be operated and mothers have been mailed assignments to take
care of everything until the season ends July 14. About 300 kids signed up.
Erickson said the School Board has promised to put hockey in the
1972-73 budget. Boys have 200 signatures so far on a petition to
get hockey in the 1971-72 budget. Hockey had a good reception at
sch. bd. mtg. but next winterts budget is already built. Sharing
costs was discussed but that wouldntt make hockey open to everyone
-- just those with enough money.
Lieb reported on the last Historical Society meetin ; the speaker
from the State Hist. Soc. spoke on markers for trs and sites.
(B) Lieb told of plans for Schooner Days June 12 and 13. They will
start with a Teen Dance Fri. night in tent; minimum of 7 rides coming
in for Sat. afternoon; Jaycees are sponsoring Miss E.P. contest;
have a melodrama planned; dance Sat. night from 9 to 1 ---tickets
will be mailed to everyone. Sat. will be geared to teeon interests
with guitar group, barbershop quartet. Sun. will be geared to
family interests: Jaycee Follies, band or chorus concert, Beer
Garden open all times with accordion player. There will be more
concessions than ever, but no parade. All local groups are represented.
It coincides with the opening of the beach with umbrellas and shade
trees new this year.
Blacklock reported that an informational meeting on new lakeshore
laws would be held May 13 at Valley View School; that a Creek Fair
publicizing values and problems of creeks and natural areas would
be held at Southdale Court May 21-23; that Wood Lake Nature Center
would have its formal opening and dedication Sun., May 23; and that
she went part of the way on the Nine MAile Creek Tour conducted by
the Watershed Bd. of Mgrs.
Jessen reported that the Metro Park bill was out of committee at
the state legislature, not too badly altered.
C. Park Land Jessen reported that E.P. has received an additional $2.500 in
Acquisition federal grants for Staring Lake land. and reviewed the lands
purchased, in negotiationb and condemnation. E.P. will be submitting
requests to Minn. Dept. of Natural Resources to coincide with Lawcon
grant.

D. Community- Jessen told of plans for a public meeting sponsored by the League
School Mtg. of Women Voters in the High School Cafetorium May 20 to get feedback
from the community on joint facility Planning and community-school
use policy. There will be discussion the program this year and a
question and answer session. Jessen will chair the meeting.
E. 1971 Round Jessen said the irrigation was budgeted at $1100, but the actual
Lake Devel- cost was $800. Have been watering round the clock and the grass is
opment beginning to turn green. Getting 40 gals. per minute. Ball fields,
Report beach, hockey and skating areas are seeded. Something will be done
to control dust on the road. Bleachers are up and benches are ordered;
costing $1092 rather than $1,000. May increase lighting by four more
lights with what saved on irrigation and well.
Beach: Bought equipment from Lafayette Club which probably cost
$800 - 1200, all in good condition, some of it never used, for
$1501 0 It includes two diving boards, high and low, plus railings,
and rope buoys. Umbrellas are being ordered. Sand will be trucked in.
Beach refreshment stand will be open on Schooner Days with season
w
tickets available.
F. Final 171 Three brochures covering Tiny Tot, Beach and Summer Recreation
Summer Rec. programs, will be mailed to all residents with a village newsletter.
Program Registration will begin June 1; Marty will call commission members
to help sign up.
G. Summer Gretchen Lake outlined ideas for a teen work program which would
Teen Work give about 60 ninth graders going into loth grade a chance to gain
Program work experience in exchange for special recreational programs.
Their work would be evaluated and they could get references for tk
future use. The structure would have to be loose, providing oppor-
tunities that teens could pick up and feed in ideas of their own.
Gretchen cited some possibilities: One work group that wanted to
play summer hockey could build and repair hockey rinks under village
supervision, and in exchange get a summer hockey program. Other work
ideas: painting park buildings, coaching girls softball and EPAA games,
cleaning up parks, raking the beach after sand delivery, followed by
a cook out, staff Teen Center refreshment stand, car washes on a
regular schedule. She suggested that teens could be awcaU "hired"
by village industries f r short term secretarial or industrial help
in exchange for help wtAWTeen Center and its programs and a short
evaluation of the work done. Adults could sign up for work at Schooner Days.
Possible recreational opportunities she suggested: softball teams,
co-ed volleyball, beach parties, camping or canoe trips, ice time
at Braemar, trips to special places and concerts ' ,c ther teens
could attend if they paid their way. ��
In the discussion of the program it was suggested that firms might
be required to furnish transportation for workers, that parents should
sign registration form, and that liability insurance, safety of job
situation and equipment should all be checked. Also that an evaluation
