CITY OF EDEN PRAIRIE
EDEN PRAIRIE PARK AND RECREATION CMISSION MEETING
July 13, 1970 7:30 p.m. Eden Prairie Villge Hall
Present: Marvin Erickson, Uilliam Garens, Dean Holasek, Nan Jean
Bofencamp, Frances Blacklock; Marty Jessen, Director of
Parks and Recreation
The meeting was called to order by the Vice Chairman, Marvin Erickson.
Minutes M/Garens, S/Holasek that the minutes of June 8 be approved. Carried.
Jaycees Pro- The E.P. Jaycees have had money raising projects for park equipment
ject and improvement. They are thinking of a "Do-something" community
oriented event at Round Lake getting the whole community to turn out
for a clean-up of b-ush and the lake. Pepsi provides beverage for
such events. The Jaycees have between $900 and 1,000 from Christmas
tree sales to purchase shade trees, picnic tables or whatever is needed
most. The colamission felt that shade trees were most important to get
started in the beach area.
Round Lake Jessen told of the drowning of a severely retarded girl at the beach.
Beach Report Her parents were on the shore at the time; no kicking or sounds of any
kind were noted; the guards have been praised by the parents for their
quick and efficient handling of the situation. The girl lived for two
hours and -the results of an autopsy are not known at this time.
Swimmers itch was cited by Jesse t s the main problem of the season.
The beach area has been,rreeatedvcopper sulphate which kills snails
(the intermediate host), suckers and weeds. The situation seems greatly
improved. The coliform �ount is way down.
(` The number of users of the beach is way down. Improvements in the area
have been made but the extreme heat and the itch may have reduced business.
In a discussion of the future of the Round Lake beach, improvements such
as dredging and grading, removing sand bar, seeding, fertilizing and a
well for watering and possibly maintaining lake level were noted.

Jessen said the ball fields have been getting good use. The EPAA had a,
an All-Star playoff and picnic at Round Lake Park the last Sat. of their
season. Erickson noted that Don Nolander and Jim Clark have been doing
a fine job.
Summer Rec. The playground program has been going well even though it sagged a bit
Report during the extreme heat. The boating skills program was cancelled for
lack of registrants and no boats were purchased. There were only 12 in
the Creative Dramatics class held in Kings Forest.

Teen Council Teens went to 3-DogA oncert. If get enough signing up, will take bus
Report load to concerts, canoe trips, Apple River float trips etc. There will
be a dance this Friday at the high school with Deb JohnAson band.
Nolander's salary to date is a little less than $300 -- same as the budget.
(He also drives swimming class bus and works on park maintenance.) He has
remodelAed the bar area in the Teen Center with a Formica counter top.
Center now has a Pepsi dispenser, candy bar, Stewart sandwich and popcorn
machines -- all. used. The Teen girls ball team is active in league play.

Anderson Lakes Jessen reported that the four agencies involved with purchasing
Pk.Planning park lands around the Anderson Lakes seem sincere in going ahead.
Report Bloomington will purchase Tierney Woods east of County Rd. 18.
Eden Prairie's responsibility will be the land between the N. and
S. lakes and the shoreline of the Carter-Gertz development (The Preserve) .
Metro Council funds will be used to pi"chase along 18 on the west side
and the north shore of the north lake from the Bloomington line west to
the Farmhand property. Hennepin County Park Reserve District will
purchase connecting corridors between the park and Hyland County Pk.
along 494 and 86th St. and the south end of the lake to Amsden Road.
There has been no change in the acquisition of Eden Prairie park lands
since March. Some properties are in negotiation and Bloomington has
some of Tierney's 6Joods tied up. Now have to get agencies' OK on the
plan and. then apply for federal matching funds.
