J EDEN PRAIRIE PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION - FEBRUARY MEETING C FEBRUARY 9, 1970 - 7:30 P.M. - Eden Prairie Village Hall PRESENT: Daniel Boos, Chairman J Marvin Erickson Bill Garens Robert Gartner Dean Holaeek Ron Allar George Hite, Village Manager Harty Jessen, Recreation Director MINUTES The meeting was called to order by the Chairman, Marvin Erickson moved that the minutes of the JAnuary 12 and 26, 1970 meeting be accepted without correction. Seconded. By Robert Gartner. Carried. George Hite introducted Marty Jessen, the new Recreation Director. Mr. Jessen will enter on duty March 2 on a half-time basis. In June and thereafter he 11 will work on a full-time basis. Background of Marty Jessen. A graduate of Arlington, Minnesota, High•_Sdhool , he was active in athletics and other extra-curricular activities, including National Honor Society. Hw is 23 years old. Married. BA degree, University j of Minnesota. Will complete course requirements for Masters in Public 1 Recreation in June 1970. Work Experience: Started at grass-roots as playground C supervisor in Crystal . Has had broad experience in all facets of recreation wort; - playgrounds, officiating, coaching, etc. Presently, Recreation Director (half-time basis) in f1aple Grove. Experience there has involved a small beginning (beach and part-time playgrounds) to a broad program including, inter alia, adult swimming, archery, teen programs, adult physical fitness, andcoup es slow pitch. He has worked closely with Osseo School District in cooperative programs involving use of school facilities, for example, use of the swimming pool. Has worked closely with Teen Activities Board which has had successful programs and large participation. George Hite indicated one area for immediate attention would be working with Eden Prairie Teen Council . Teen Center Ron Allar reported that last Saturday a crew of about eight spent the day cleaning up, George Hite reported that the basement ceiling has been roughed in, but the tile has yet to be placed. Dorsey Holt has compiled a list of needed physical imporvements. The vending machine company will not replace damaged.machines. The telepbone company will not put in another phone. A second arson attempt failed since the proposed conflagration was started on the outside of the building and was extinguished by melting snow, Parklands Acquisition. Action on all parcels approved for acquisition under fund matching programs has been completed. Two ownerships are being condemned. LAWCON - Minnesota's 1970 allortment available for distribution is $600,000. Requests from 76 policital entities total over $7,000,000. Anderson Lakes - Eden Prairie, Bloomington, Hennepin County Park Reserve District j ; `P..i Park and Recreation Minutes February 9, 1970 Page 2 and Metro Park Board, along with the major potential developer, Carter-Gertz, have mapped out a 400+ acre acquisition project with an estimated price tag of $2,000,000. Financial participation as follows: Federal funds $1,000,000 other entities $250,000 each. Round Lake - Acquisition complete except for one ownership which is in condemnation. LAWCON - 1970 priorities (1) inter-lake lands at Anderson LAkes (west of Highway 18), (2) North side of Starring Lake. HUD - All other proposed parcels.
