Parks and Recreation - 03/11/1968 1968 MARCH I I MINUTES CITY OF EDEN PRAIRIE I EDEN PRAIRIE PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING March 11, 1968 8:00 P.M. Eden Prairie Village Hall Present: Chuck Brace, Vice-Chairman, Harry Picha, Frances j Blacklock, Secretary Guest: Bill Holte The meeting was called to order by Chuck Brace. (Les Wise had submitted hi resignation to the Council before this meeting, and it had been accepted.) The minutes of the last meeting were approved as published. Round Lake Prop_ Harry Picha said the School Board was interested in the Jarrett erty and Tweet properties on Round Lake and would like to know how much land the Village would take for park. It was agreed that any recommendations should wait until Don Brauer has made his b planning report to -the village on March 19• Summer Recreation Bill Holte, summer recreation director for the past several Report and Plans years said he would not be available this summer as he is going to summer school. Nancy Carling, his assistant paid by SRA last year will also attend summer school this year. Bill agreed to contact other teachers who might be interested and qualified to direct the program, and help line up assistants. Equipment is stored at Village Hall with some larger pieces in Bill's garage. Bill submitted his report of last years program; it is on file with the minutes. A change in insurance coverage of school buses will make i,t necessary for the village to pay for bus insurance when used for the summer recreation program. Hiring private carriers who would have their own insurance seemed advisable. It was agreed to investigate accident insurance coverage for the children, with a possible registration fee to cover it. Bill Holte felt that running buses to pick up children and bring them to the rec program would put too grat a load. on the facilities and the leaders. He would prefer to have more neighborhood pro- grams similar to the one held in the past at Sterling Field. Other possible sites to consider are: Flying Cloud ball diamonds, Prairie View Elementary School, Birch Island Park, the Presbyterian Church field, the Methodist Church and the adjacent village property; and- some area in the Kings Forest district. All the Field Trips held last summer were successful, taking 2 to 3 buses to hold those going. Special features of the program seemed to work well and were recommended for the future. Golfers met at the school and were bused to Cedar Hills course on Monday mornings. They played golf (about 25 students) with some supervision. guidance in golf etiquette and some basic swings. Ended with own tournament plus a Jaycee- Eden Prairie Park and Recreation Meeting March 11, 1968 Page 2 sponsored tournament. The Jaycees also sponsored a Track Meet which had to be postponed. This normally should precede the i track event at the U. of M. which was not held last year due to the Pan-Am Games conflict. Chess was suggested as an additional feature which might be popular with some. Sill said he would contact the Suburban Recreation Assn. office J regarding next summer's program as soon as we have our staff K lined up. He assumed they would. supply events similar to those in the past -- Arts and. Crafts, and Puppet Shows. 4 0 g popular Quanta last summer were Weiner roasts and cook-outs .; on the Everett Moran property on Mitchell Lake. It is ,just a short hike from the school. The girls camped out one night. A small fee to cover food costs was charged. The Secretary was asked to contact Terry Hanson, a former assis- tant to see if she is interested in the position held by Nancy - Carling. Bill Holte will report to Chuck Brace regarding teachers 4 interested in the director's position. © M/Picha, S/Brace that the meeting be adjourned.
