Present: Les Wise, Dave Osterholt, Frances Blacklock a Riley Lake Beach Preceding the meeting at the Village Hall, the Commission met at Riley Lake Beach to evaluate its present condition and possibilities for future development. The refuse barrel had apparently been emptied the night before. Parking speco was inadequate. There were no ropes, diving raft or other facilities. Vandals had torn off the chain closing the entrance after swimming hours, and taken the Riley .Beach sign. Minutes The Commission reconvened at Village Hall at 8 p.m. The meeting was called. to order by Les Wise, vice chairman. Minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed. 3 Kutcher Property Dave Osterholt reported that the Kutcher property on Birch purchased Island Lake had been .purchased as per the Council minutes 3 of. June 13. Brauer to Study I.7/Osterholt, S/ Ilacklock thd�the Park and Recreation Commission Riley and Birch recommend to the Council that they authorize Brauer and Associates Island properties to study Riley Beach and the Birch Island property for recommended developments. (Need advice on parking areas, beach enlargment, docks, ropes, lifeguard, grading, additional acquisition etc.) �QhJt.c.ccQ. (At the July 11 Council meeting, the Council passed a motion asking Brauer to study the above two areas.) (Dave Osterholt requested the road crew to mow the beach area and repair the entrance gate.) Budget The 1968 Park and Recreation budget will be discussed at the AurNst meoting� when park development plans will be considered.. 1 Kings Forest School There was a discussion of the purchase of land for a school in Site the Kings Forest area, where it is hoped the village may acquire 1 park property. It was acted that the Village will have 30 days to review the purchase of the property by the School Board. Sumner Recreation The Secretary reported on the printing and distribution of the Schedules Schedules. Each pupil at Central and Pairie View Elementary schools received a schedule with his report card. Additional j schedules were available to Junior and Senior High students, those attending Schooner Day, and others were distributed to �. stores and other centers in the village by. the Recreation staff. i � t i Park and Recreation Commission Minutes 7/10/67 Page 2 Re commendations for It was suggested that next year the schedules be mailed to 1968 schedules every home in the village; Q that the track meet could possibly be held the week after school closes to get greater participation; that the possibility of bus routes to pick up children beinvestigated. Park financing There was a discussion of the possibility of a 2 mil levy I or a bond issue to include park acquisition and development. i I Brauer to attend. The Secretary was instructed to ask Don Brauer to attend August meeting the August meeting to discuss park planning and financing. Anderson Lakes County Frances Blacklock reported that some telephone calls to Park Hennepin County Park and Metropolitan Planning Commission officials showed that, contrary to a newspaper report, both bodies were still interested in the Anderson Lakes area for a county park, but that funds were a problem. Commission size Dave Osterholt said he would contact Hopkins officials regarding the number of members who can serve on a Park and Recreation Commission, following up on a statement in the Hennepin County Review that such Commissions are limited to three members. Charles Brace was appointed to fill out his term. Mayor Osterholt appointed a three-man committee to investigate ways and means to bring about the establishment of Anderson i Lakes County Park. June 19 with registration and an arts and crafts session from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. An 8-week aum:ner Recreation program of games, sports, track. arts and crafts, puppet shows, gymnastics and storytimes trill be held Monday through Friday at the Central Elementary School playground from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for boys and girls six through fifteen. Exceptions to the I ( schedule will be tionday mornings when there will be golf at Cedar bills and when special events are planned. or when it rains. i.:ednesday afternoons a neighborhood program will also be held at Sterling Field. A Junior '.Crack "-?eet June 26 and a Junior Golf Meer July 15 gill be sponsored by the laden Prairie Jaycees. Field trips to the Arboretum. Como Park. Twins baseball game and the Pan-Am games at the University of `.-4 nnesota are scheduled during the simmer. William Holte, Sumer Recreation Director, will be assisted by Nancy Uarling, Peggy Swanson and Jim Rohe. Noon bag lunch hours will be suprevised. The program is sponsored by the Llden Prairie Park and Recreation Commission and the suburban Recreation Association, a United Fund Agency. Summer F'untine Calendars are available at the %don Prairie Village Hall. All recreational facilities in the village such as surmer swim classes. junior baseball sohedule, stables. picnic grounds and special events are included on the calendars.
