Eden Prairie Village Hall Present: Don Nygaard, Chairman, Howard Merriman, Harry Picha, Frances Backlock Guests: Mr. and Mrs. Joe Flesher, Sill Holte e was discussion of potential park land on Starring Starring Lake There Lake. Land near schools Don Nygaard will consult with the school attorney about future park land adjacent to a school. Summer Recreation Bill Holte stated that storage space was needed for present equipment and for any that might be purchased for next summer. Inquiry will be made about space in the village hall. Rill will look for equipment with next summer in mind. He presented his report of the 1966 suww program (attached). M/Bl.acklock, S/Merriman that the Commission begin planning program, personnel and equipment for the 1967 Summer Program at the February, 1967 meeting. Carried. Jaycee participation M/P.icha. S/Merriman that the Secretary write a letter of appreciation to the Eden Prairie Jaycees for their fine participation in the 1966 Summer Recreation Program. Carried. M/Merriman. S/Picha that the meeting be adjourned. Carried. Frances ffiacklock, Secretary Next meeting. Monday, November 7. 1966 EDEN PRAIRIE RECREATION REPORT - 1966 Director: Bill Holte Ass't. Directors; Nancy Carling, Terry Hanson 1. Length of Program 8 weeks - June 20 to Aug. 12 Registration was June 20 Daily Hours; 9-12 1-3 Monday thru Friday 11. This year the E. P. Park Board had printed up 2000 copies of the Summer Recreation Schedule. These were distributed the last week of school to the children in the Grade school and Junior high. Many copies were left at various businesses in E.P. 111. Attendance 1. approximately 220 registered 2. average attendance would be about 50 at the playground 3. Sterling Field about 30 - 35 ll� 4. Golfing on Mondays' 20 - 25 IV. Location of Activities 1. Eden Prairie Central Elementary Area was again the center of activities The grade school playground and equipment was used at various times. 2. The High School track was used for our Runathon, practice and also a track meet sponsored by the J.C. 's 3. Cedar Hills Golf Course was scheduled every Monday A.M. 4. Recreation was scheduled at Sterling Field on Monday Afternoon 1-3 V. Equipment 8 Fa.�ilities Used For the most part the summer recreation equipment is still very limited. A big problem is where to store the equipment even if we did have it. At present it is stored in my garage. r { (2) \ Eden prairie schools again let us use their trampoline, parallel bars., balance beam, tetherball stands and other item. Washroom and lavatory facilities were used in the west wing of the i grade school. One of the 1st grade rooms was used for our crafts pro- gram. A school bus was also available for trips. VI. Lunch Hour The noon hour was supervised on every day except Monday from 12-1. Nancy Carling and Terry Hanson were in charge. VII. Different Activities: 1. Suburban Recreation Crafts 7 different days. All day 9;30-12 2, " " Puppet shows 1-3 (4 times - one of these was held at Sterling Field - the first time this has been tried. ) 3. J.C. sponsored Track [Meet on Eden Prairies's tract (70-80 participated). 4. Track Meet "Goverors Physical Fitness" at Univ. of Minnesota. Spon- sored by Mpls. J.C. 's - 50 participants - won 18 ribbons. 5. J.C. sponsored Golf meet at Cedar Hills. (3 beautiful trophies were given out) 6. Pet Fair 7. Field trip to Como Park (needed 2 buses this year - 88 attended) 8. Attended Minnesota Twins game - about 65 attended. 9. Baseball Clinic given by 19r. Ryski our H.S. baseball coach. 10. Golf lessons were given by our Golf coach, Mr. Engstrom. This did not work out too well because of a lack of communication. 11. Punt, Pass & Kick - again was held this fall. Several grade school I teachers supervised the tournament. (3) 12. Birthday Party (last day) This year a smorgasborg - corn feed with each one bringing some item to eat. Some of the mothers helped to serve. Nothers were also invited to attend. 13. Overnight for girls - (6,7,8th grades) Nancy Carling Terry supervised at Al Brekke Farm. Mrs. Carling acted as chaperone. 14. Civil War days (ugh) - water gun fights 15. Games - whiffle ball - softball - box hockey - Shelly - croquet - Bombardment, also quiet games. 16. [likes - Terry & Nancy took the girls on a nature hike. 17. Runathon: The track was used for this. Participants could'walk or runlops were recorded. Graig Blacklock was the winner with 4411 miles. 18. Swimming - Mr. & Mrs. Emblom made their pool available on 4 �I occasions. 40-50 attended each time. 19. Mrs. Fran Anderson provided Story telling, Dramatics and quiet games for the 6-7 year olds. VIII. Some thoughts about next year: 1. Buy more quiet type games, such as Skelly, Box Hockey etc. Shop around before next Spring. 2. I•lore tourn-aients 3. Each leader be rc-ponsible for a certain age group 4. Rainy days? 5. Kings Forest - once a week??? 6. Additional leader 7. Storage of equipment ( 8. Dramatics 9. KX I "" S ecial events. such as P You sponsored, were the highlights of the Suer Recreation Program, Such events take manpower to d be successful, and we are grateful for the hours of time and effort that went into planning and running them. We hope that the challenge and enjoyment the members got from these events was enough to sharpen interest in 1967. We will begin pulling next su=er"s plans together at our February sixth meating and would weloame ideas from the Jaycees at that time. or whenever you have an idea that would be of mutual interest.
