Human Rights and Diversity - 05/08/2001 APPROVED MINUTES Eden Prairie Human Rights & Diversity Citizen Advisory Commission Tuesday, May 8, 2001 7:00 PM - Prairie Rooms A/B, City Center 8080 Mitchell Road, Eden Prairie MN 55344 Citizen Advisory Holly Clynch, Dorothy Fifield, Angie Garcia, Balu Iyer, Commission Members: Jodi Malmquist, Harry Moran (Chair), and Philip Young (Vice-Chair) Student Representatives: Amber Swiggum, Rachael Harlos, and Jaclyn Matzen Commission Staff: Michael Barone, Manager of Human Resources & Record Services (Staff Liaison), and Tanya Whitsitt, Administrative Assistant(Recording Secretary) I. Roll Call ® Dorothy Fifield ® Harry Moran ® Philip Young ❑ Balu Iyer ❑ Angie Garcia ® Holly Clynch ® Jodi Malmquist Student Representatives Rachael Harlos and Jaclyn Matzen were present and Amber Swiggum was absent. The meeting was called to order by Chair Moran at 7:02 p.m. Vice-Chair Young arrived at 7:08 p.m. Moran introduced himself to Jodi Malmquist and Holly Clynch and welcomed them to the Commission. He discussed his background and his involvement in the Commission and in the community. II. Approval of Agenda Malmquist moved, seconded by Clynch to approve the Agenda as published. Motion carried: 4—0. (Moran abstained) III. Approval of Minutes for April 10, 2001 meeting Fifield moved, seconded by Malmquist to approve the Minutes from the April 10, 2001 meeting. Motion carried: 4—0. (Moran abstained) IV. Reports of Staff A. South Hennepin Immigrant Services Group (SHISG) Barone said he was unable to attend the SHISG meeting the previous Monday. He stated that he would include the agenda in the packet for the next HRDCAC meeting. B. Human Services Review Committee (HSRC) Nothing new to report. C. Bias Crime Activity Status Nothing new to report. Eden Prairie Human Rights&Diversity Citizen Advisory Commission May 8,2001 Unapproved Minutes Page 2 Barone distributed a flyer for a May 24 luncheon sponsored by FamiLink. The purpose of the luncheon is to discuss issues (i.e. domestic abuse) affecting the local Russian community. Barone stated that he would not be able to go,but encouraged to the Commission members to attend. Fifield and Clynch said they would like to attend, but will check their calendars. Malmquist, who is involved with FamiLink will already be present. Clynch asked if it was open for anyone to attend and that she may have colleagues interested. Barone said that anyone is welcome to be there and he will soon contact FamiLink with a list of who is planning to attend. V. Old Business A. Review of HRA & YSA items for May 1. Tuesday, May 15, 2001 City Council meeting Barone handed out news releases on the HRA and YSA. He said the recipient of the HRA and both recipients of the YSA's will be present at the May 15, 2001 meeting to receive recognition from the Mayor and City Council. The recognition is the first item on the agenda and will take about 20 minutes. Plaques will be presented by Moran at the speaker's podium and the Mayor will read a brief statement about each recipient. Each recipient will be given a chance to thank the Council. All commission members are invited to attend. 2. Thursday, May 31, 2001 EPHS Academic Awards Night Barone said that the Eden Prairie High School Academic Award Night will be held on May 31. Moran and Young will attend. The two student recipients of the YSA's will be presented their plaques (again) at the ceremony. VI. New Business A. Thank you to Student Representatives; last meeting for Swiggum, Harlos, and Matzen Moran noted that this is the last meeting for the Student Representatives. He thanked them on behalf of the Commission for their contributions and welcome input on such topics as the YSA and the Eden Prairie High School Diversity Fair. Their positive feedback and help with is greatly appreciated. He said that is it good to see such excellent representation from the youth of Eden Prairie. (Cake and beverages were served in honor of the Student Representatives after the meeting.) VII. Future Meetings/Events • Next meeting the HRDCAC is scheduled for June 12, 2001. A topic for"New Business" will be the planning and discussion on the "DiverseCity on the Prairie" event in August. If available, Tria Mann, Parks & Recreation, will be invited to come and speak to the Commission about this years event. For Your Information • No HRDCAC meetings will be held in July or August.
