HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuman Rights and Diversity - 06/13/2013 APPROVED MINUTES EDEN PRAIRIE HUMAN RIGHTS AND DIVERSITY COMMISSION THURSDAY,JUNE 13, 2013 7:00 P.M., 125 EDEN PRAIRIE CENTER Office of Housing and Human Services COMMISSION MEMBERS: Laura Kaczmarek (Chair), PG Narayanan (Vice Chair), Zina Nourkadi, Jenny Buckland, Sana Elassar, Sandra Filardo, Connie Iacovelli STAFF: Patricia Fenrick, Staff Molly Koivumaki, Recorder STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES: Kristina Busch, Camrie Vlasak & Jamie Bernard I. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL Vice Chair Narayanan called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Commissioners Kaczmarek, and Student Representatives Vlasak and Bernard were absent. II. APPROVAL OF AGENDA MOTION: Buckland moved, seconded by Elassar to approve the agenda. Motion carried 6-0. III. MINUTES MOTION: Filardo moved, seconded by Nourkadi, to approve the May 9, 2013 minutes. Motion carried 6-0. IV. PRESENTATION from Joyce Lorenz, EP City Communications Manager Lorenz presented a PowerPoint that covered the following topic areas: • Outline of the Communications Staff • Evolution of the Division since 2007 • Examples of Marketing materials designed by the Communications staff • Internal/External Communications Vehicles used by the staff • Media Relations/Crisis communications • Branding and Image Management V. OLD BUSINESS A. ADVOCATES OF HUMAN RIGHTS ONE VOICE PROJECT Buckland reported that a meeting to train the facilitators and note takes for the August 20th event will take place on Julyl 1, at Buckland's residence. HUMAN RIGHTS AND DIVERSITY COMMISSION MINUTES June 13, 2013 Page 2 Buckland reported that there will be two groups, one focused on adults and one on youth (grade 8 and above). Buckland reported that five people so far have agreed to participate in the training, and four more are needed. Nourkadi suggested that perhaps members of the KaJoog group would be useful in this training. Fenrick explained the logistics of the training including the registration process, the marketing strategy and the timing of the media release. B. MN HUMANITIES CENTER GRANT After researching the idea to collaborate with the Historical Society on this grant, it was determined to not be a good fit. C. ART OF HOSTING The Art of Hosting Conversations with the International School and the Eden Prairie High School occurred in mid-May. It was a good beginning to start a deeper conversation about cultural awareness and how we are inclusive and welcoming as a community. Presentations to the School Board and City Council are being discussed to present the findings from the conversations exercise. D. COLUMN IN THE EP NEWS Fenrick reported that she was informed that Commissions are not permitted,by policy of the City Manager, to host such columns. Individual Commissioners can write an article about a topic for the paper,however. VI. REPORTS OF STAFF A. HUMAN SERVICES REVIEW COMMITTEE Fenrick reported on the upcoming grant funding cycle. B. BIAS CRIME ACTIVITY Fenrick reported that no crimes of bias had been reported. C. PRESENTATIONS TO HRDC Fenrick did research on diversity and inclusion clubs at the Eden Prairie High School and suggested inviting the groups to make short 5-8 minute presentations to the HRDC at upcoming meetings. Filardo offered to take the lead in this initiative. D. PARTNERSHIP WITH COMMUNITY ED HUMAN RIGHTS AND DIVERSITY COMMISSION MINUTES June 13, 2013 Page 3 Buckland and Narayanan recapped the discussion about a potential initiative with Community Ed, and possibly the International School. The initiative would be a series on cultural awareness and would take the place of the Who Are Your Neighbors series. E. INTERNATIONAL TOWN HALL Fenrick reported that the City Council's International Town Hall will take place in 2014 and Commissioners were asked to consider the best time of year to hold the meeting. Nourkadi offered to assist Fenrick with the organization of this event. F. HUMAN RIGHTS AND CULTURAL FILMS Fenrick reported on possible partnerships with the Library with a program called Community Cinema Program, which would take place once a month or twice a quarter. G. CULTURAL AWARNESS TRAINING AT EPHS Fenrick met with Nanette Missagi from the Eden Prairie School District. Missagi is willing to do a presentation to the HRDC about the cultural awareness training and activities happening in the school district. Fenrick and Missagi also discussed raising more awareness about the American Indian history of this area. VII. NEW BUSINESS A. RESCHEDULE SEPTEMBER MEETING The Commission agreed to change the September meeting from the 12th to the 19th and Fenrick will handle making the proper notification of the date change. B. NEW STUDENT COMMISSIONERS Fenrick read brief bois on new Student Commissioners, Emily Higgins, Karena Lin, Chase Carlson and returning Commissioner Kristina Busch. VIII. REPORTS FROM COMMISSION MEMBERS No reports IX. One Voice discussion. X. ADJOURNMENT Iacovelli moved, seconded by Elassar to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried 6-0. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 pm.
