VISITS WITH AIRPORT BUSINESSES AND AIRPORT TOUR

I. OPTIONAL—FCM CONTROL TOWER TOUR (Noon— 1:00 pm)
The Commission members had a tour of the Flying Cloud Control Tower from FAA Tower
Chief Warren McVey. Members were briefed on the tower operations and how
communications are handed off from one controlling authority to another. The tower
cleared three planes to land during our visit just before a strong thunderstorm passed with
winds up to 50 knots.
II. CALL THE MEETING TO ORDER
The meeting began at 1:30 pm at the base of the tower. Commission members and student
representatives proceeded in three separate vehicles to begin the airport tour and visits to airport
businesses.
III. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
The agenda was not formally approved but rather used for logistics of the tour since it
may involve different routes and business visit timing.
IV. WELCOME STUDENT MEMBERS
The two student representatives, James Maslyn and Michael Dennis were in attendance
for the airport tour and business visits.

V. VISIT WITH AIRPORT BUSINESSES
A. V 1 This is a private hangar owned by Scott Fredrickson. He and a partner share
ownership in the hangar and two aircraft: a twin-engine Beechcraft Duke, and
single-engine Cessna 172 on floats. Joe Harris wanted the Commission to see what
can be done to update and improve the look of some of the older hangars on the
field. Fredrickson lead a tour of his hangar which includes a lounge for flight
planning and some leisure entertainment while spending time with their families on
weekends.
B. Elliott Aviation Ben Johnson, Line Manager, indicated they are a Raytheon
Service Center for the upper Midwest. He gave us a tour of their facilities and
explained the different types of aircraft they maintain and service. This included a
Hawker jet with a gross weight of approximately 25,000 lbs,and the Citation Excel
which is about 80% efficient with a 3,900 foot runway.
C. Merle Marshal Hangar Merle is an employee of MAC as well as a hangar owner
who also subleases portions of his hangar to five additional aircraft owners. His
facility is part of the older hangars along Pioneer Trail.
D. Modern Avionics Kurt Schendel is the owner. His business involves the
repair/replacement of older avionic equipment as well as installation of new
avionic equipment and refurbishing of cockpit panels. His business has been very
successful over the years. He handles a lot of the older avionic equipment from all
over the country.
E. In Fliizht Training Ben McQuillan is the owner. This facility is a focused one on
one operation providing quality flight instruction at an affordable price. Aircraft
rental, air rides, single and multi engine instruction and more. He offers free
ground instruction and free Saturday morning seminars.
VI. TOUR OF AIRPORT PERIMETER
Following the business tours the Commission visited the construction site for the extension
of municipal sewer and water to serve the businesses along Pioneer Trail. The
Commission then proceeded on a cross county four wheel trek along the perimeter fence on
the west and south sides of the airport ending back at the control tower.

The business visits and tour ended at approximately 4:00 pm
