B. Spring/Summer Programming Update
Danhauser said many registrations have been received already. There are many
children registered for the musical arts camp. There is a wild wheels camp that
isn't doing as well for registrations. There are seven summer camps that are
almost full.
Obiazor said there were nearly 1600 participants in 2009. In 2010 there were
nearly 5000 participants.
VI. PETITIONS, REOUETS AND COMMUNICATION
None.
VII. OLD BUSINESS
A. Review & Update 2011 Work Plan
Obiazor reviewed the 2011 work plan. Danhauser said there was a grant
submitted to MRAC and it hasn't been approved yet. The grant is for helping to
write ordinances to help with art placement in the City during development in the
City. There is discussion for placing a mural on a garage door on the exterior of
the Art Center. The two work plan items "discuss vending opportunities at the Art
Center" and "review community event offerings to evaluate the relevance related
to current community needs & trends" will be discussed during the May 2011
meeting.
Obiazor said there is an idea of having a mural in the City.
MOTION: Paulson moves to charge City staff to look at ways to develop City
ordinances, policies, and procedures for public art and text on the Art Center
Garage doors. Motion was seconded by Elliott-Stoering. Motion carried 4-0.
Danhauser said Obiazor and Danhauser will look at ways to work on the garage
doors. Kathawalla, Ramos, and Eliott-Stoering will meet at the Community
Center and drive to other locations to see spaces to get ideas for art.
Obiazor said the Art Center, Community Center, Senior Center, and Outdoor
Center are great locations for public art placement.
Elliott-Stoering said there could be a need to change the focus of Round Lake to
move it away from a swimming location. There could be fitness stations or art
sculptures around the lake on the trail. Ramos suggested the lake could have
walking trails through the lake with natural plants placed throughout. Elliot-

Stoering said there has been discussion about a fountain being placed in Round
Lake. Ramos said the negative about Round Lake is the mileage around the lake
is too short to be a walking lake.
Bivins suggested an idea of having a class pass to be able to sample the different
Art Center classes. The participants wouldn't have to bring their own materials.
Ramos said there could be a class with four different instructors with four
different medias and the fee for the sampling class would include the partipants
supplies.
Obiazor said that each member may not understand their contribution but the
change for the International Festival is good and helpful. The events don't need to
go in one direction. Obiazor thanked Bivins for her suggestion. Bivens thanked
Ramos and Kathawalla for their help with the International Festival.
B. Photo Contest Update
Danhauser said May 9 is the deadline for the photo contest. There is voting
through Facebook and in the public City buildings. There is a youth and adult
category. Flash donated a photo package for a prize. The staff will narrow down
the selections to vote on.
Obiazor and Danhauser will meet with the environmental coordinator to talk
about recycled art or a type of art including environmental conservation.
VIII. NEW BUSINESS
A. Pop Up Art
Bivins said this could be an event for all arts: music, fine arts, etc. The event
would be an impromptu event. There could be people dancing, artists painting,
bands playing. There could be either a vacant building used or in an open spaces
indoors or outdoors. Ramos suggested the event could be started in the summer
and then a winter event could be planned later. Bivins said there would need to be
a registration, so the City knew how many artists were coming. Danhauser
suggested the artists could register for a time slot. Ramos suggested there be
water, ice cream, and pop sold to generate some income. Danhauser said
concession sales could bring in $200 - $300. Danhauser said it costs $500 to insert
into the Eden Prairie Newspaper, plus the cost of copies and a '/a page ad costs
$400. Danhauser said the less structured the better it would be for this event.
Obiazor said it would need to be an event for 2012 and there could be more
discussion later this year.
