V. ART CENTER
A. Facility Improvements —New Entry Sidewalk
Obiazor said the sidewalk was replaced because it was a tripping concern.
Obiazor said pottery wheels and an art hanging system are additional future
improvements. The hanging art system would be for exhibiting art on a rotating
basis.
B. Summer Programming Recap
Obiazor said there were about 300 students in classes from June 21 —August 27.
The increase in classes was mostly due to interest in the clay classes. In addition,
there was more variety of classes this summer.
C. Summer Open Studio Recap
None.
D. Summer Birthday Party Recap
Obiazor said there have been 60 birthday parties year to date. The parties are $150
per birthday person. The parties have brought a lot of children into the Art Center.
Now there are birthday party magnets given out at the parties. Regarding the
birthday party brochures, Petry-Lee said it could be helpful to have some variety
in the pictures and the types of activities to show the parties can be for boys and
adults. Obiazor said every City staff person now has a digital camera to take
pictures at events. Ramos said there was a contest at Hennepin County libraries
this summer for a short movies, essays, and photography. Ramos said the City
should look into hosting this type of contest.
Ramos said the Art Center website should be improved as well. It takes a very
long time to find the classes an individual may be signed up for. Obiazor said the
City is looking to improve the whole website. Ramos said the Art Center webpage
could link to a website location to find the Art Center classes.

VII. OLD BUSINESS
A. Subcommittee for the Development of Criteria for Public Art—Availability &
Scheduling
Obiazor said the goal of the subcommittee is to develop suggested criteria for
placement of public art. The subcommittee would provide input and suggestions
for art in public and private development.
B. International Festival Recap
Kathawalla said the International Festival was not as successful as in the past. The
vendors said it wasn't worthwhile. Kathawalla said she thinks August isn't a good
time of the year for people attending the festival and the date should be changed.
The end of May or just before school starts could be good times. Ramos said May
can be bad weather. Petry-Lee suggested the middle of September. Obiazor said
the festival could be the kickoff to the concert series. Instead of one concert, there
could be a whole day of events.
Bivins showed a YouTube video on the International Festival. The YouTube
video is named International Festival 2010 PSA. The International Festival
involved a variety of activities.
• Somali Soccer Tournament
• Cricket Demonstration
• Free children's art activities
• Live music entertainment
• Dance competition with Salsa Del Soul
• Craft, cultural, and service organization vendor booths.
Bivins said the amount of publicity should be addressed for future festivals.
Obiazor said new billboard signs were approved for all major events. The signs
can be put up for ten days prior to an event. August is a difficult time of year and
would like to find a way for the event to work. Kathawalla asked who actually
completed the survey. She received much less favorable results than the survey
shows. Bivins asked if there are follow up meetings for the International Festival.
She said there wasn't a follow up meeting for this year's festival. Bivins said
there shouldn't only be a one day event and diversity should be brought into every
activity. The City needs to think about diversity and inclusion for all events.
Kathawalla said the event used to be called Diversity on the Prairie. Ramos said it
would be nice to have diversity within all of the programming. Obiazor said there
are some things to consider with including diversity in the concert series.
• Do you incorporate diversity suddenly and do it by actions.
• You can build awareness by exposure.
• There could be ethnic food matching the music.

Kathawalla said it may be difficult to have vendors to match the music, but she
likes the idea. Ramos said they should try to have a halal vendor. Kathawalla said
the years the International Festival had 2 stages were very exciting. It is more
work, but it was exciting. Ramos said that may be part of the attendance decrease.
If there were parents and families attending to see their children perform, they
may not be attending anymore.
Petry-Lee asked if the location could be changed to Purgatory Creek. There could
be more support from Southwest Station for food. Many people would maybe
walk across the street to get food. Flyers could advertize at Southwest Station.
The visibility may help with attendance. The name should be considered to be
changed to Community Festival.
Kathawalla said the following should be considered for the International Festival.
• Change the name to Eden Prairie Community Festival
• Look into different locations (maybe Purgatory Creek)
• Change the date to May or September 2011. Kathawalla would like
September more.
C. Sunbonnet Day Recap
Obiazor said there were about 300 people at Sunbonnet Day this year. This event
