PETITIONS, REQUESTS AND COMMUNICATION ARTS & CULTURE COMMISSION MINUTES October 12, 2009 Page 3 None. VII. OLD BUSINESS A. Art Crawl Recap Danhauser said the Eden Prairie Art Crawl feedback was positive. The houses weren't as easy to find and the public wanted more detail on the map. There was some feedback was the event should not be juried. A juried show is a step to determine if there is quality art work. Ramos said it would be helpful to have the range of prices for the artists. The price information could be helpful for the artists and the jury. It could help the artists to determine what price pieces sold more this year, while preparing for next years show. Danhauser said there were 220 people were tallied who attend the event and attendees probably did not attend every location. Rorem said she thinks she had around 100 people at her house. Danhauser said she received some feedback the Art Crawl should start later than 10:00 am on Sunday. B. Religious HolidayUpdate The Commission read and discussed the letter written by Pamela Spera about religious holidays. Obiazor said the letter may be more vague than the actual policy. The policy is what will be discussed at the City Council meeting. Ramos said it would be helpful to have the top two holidays, at most three holidays, for each religious group in Eden Prairie. The holiday names only need to be listed, not the dates, since some of the dates change each year because of the lunar calendar. Obiazor said she will share the discussion with Scott Neal and how the policy will be detailed and who determines what holidays to not schedule events on. Ramos said there should be a study to determine the holidays and then each year the dates can be assigned to each holiday. Petry-Lee asked if the feedback would be from individual members and not the Commission. Petry-Lee recommends not making the avoiding of holidays mandatory because there may be unavoidable reasons to not schedule something on one particular day. Kathawalla said the selection of holidays to avoid scheduling events on can get so complicated and said selecting one holiday for each religion may be more reasonable. C. Artist Network Update & Schedule Next Meeting Date Danhauser said the previous Artist Network meeting had an activity of playful portraits on each other. There were five artists. There weren't as many people as anticipated. For the next meeting, clay tiles are an idea for an activity. The next Artist Network meeting will be December 8, 7:00 p.m., at the Art Center. D. Revisit Windsor Plaza Art Project Rorem said at the October 6, 2008 meeting, Janet Jeremiah spoke about the Windsor Plaza. The Commission was under the impression they would be able to ARTS & CULTURE COMMISSION MINUTES October 12, 2009 Page 4 review, and have a say in, the art before being decided upon and installed. In June, the art was only presented to the Commission as what was being installed. Ramos said it would be helpful to have the Commission's role in Art around the City to be clarified. The artistic quality is a concern and should be considered during the process. Kathawalla said the art on Windsor Plaza is on private property. Obiazor said most developers want to be good neighbors and would see the value in allowing the Commission to participate in the process. VIII. NEW BUSINESS None. IX. REPORTS OF STAFF AND COMMISSIONERS A. Sunbonnett Da.. R Sunbonnett Day was on Sunday, September 13 at Riley Jacques Barn. The event was co-sponsored by the Historical Society. There were around 250 people in attendance. There was an area church with an activity on the same day, which may have lowered the attendance. Obiazor said a 2010 calendar of events will be put together to look at what days the events are on and if they conflict with City or community events. B. Art on City Walls —2010 Exhibits The deadline was extended because there were only six artists who applied. Ramos said schools could be contacted putting art on the walls. The walls may need to be redesigned for some types of art. Ramos said there is more commercial viability at the Art Center. Volunteers could be contacted for helping hang the art in the Art Center. There are many moms who may like to help with setting up the art. C. Eden Prairie Residents Guide—Artist Resource Directory Ramos asked if there is a way to update the Residents Guide online. Danhauser said it could be online and could be updated online. Danhauser said she will meet with communications to determine what needs to be worked on to set up a website. Danhauser said the Residents Guide could be started putting online and the Artists Network could be worked on next. Rorem said Ramos could send Danhauser an email with contact information for updating the Residents Guide next year. Ramos said she would like to be a test case for how difficult it is to have information put into the Residents guide. D. Recent Grant Applications to MRAC & the Eden Prairie Foundation Danhauser said she turned a grant into MRAC for the Egyptian Water Lily project to enhance community arts. Community members could be involved in assembling and installing the art. The art installation would be recorded.
