FLYING CLOUD AIRPORT CONTROL TOWER 10110 Flying Cloud Drive COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Rick King; Commissioners: Judy Gentry, Greg McKewan and Jeff Nawrocki COMMISSION MEMBERS ABSENT: Jeff Larsen, Mark Michelson and Kurt Schendel STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES: J.P. Maslyn and Tanay Mehta STAFF: Scott Kipp, Senior Planner I. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL Chair King called the meeting to order at 1:05 p.m. II. APPROVAL OF AGENDA The agenda was not formally approved but rather used for logistics of the tour since no specific itinerary was planned. III. FCM CONTROL TOWER TOUR The commission members and student representatives were invited into the control tower by Warren McVey, the tower chief. There was little traffic at the airport due to the gusty winds the south parallel runway fully under construction. From the view of the tower the commission could see the future hangar area and the runway extension to the west starting to take shape. The air traffic controllers were setting up arrival and departure sequencing on the computer. This was a significant upgrade from our previous visit when the controllers physically moved paper strips with aircraft information as the sequencing occurred. IV. WELCOME NEW STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES A. TANAY MEHTA B. SAM CLARK Tanay Mehta, one of our new student representatives joined us for the tour, while J.P. Maslyn, our departing student representative enjoyed the tour as a great end to his term. FLYING CLOUD AIRPORT ADVISORY COMMISSION AIRPORT TOUR July 9, 2009 Page 2 V. VISIT WITH AIRPORT BUSINESSES A. AIROVATION The tour included a visit with Airovation, an on airport business that specializes in upholstery and aircraft interiors. Work is down, but hopeful for the future. VI. TOUR OF CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS The van tour was conducted by Jeff Nawrocki, the airport manager, and Andy Peek, SEH Engineer for the expansion project. The tour included a view of the storm water holding basins designed to accommodate significant storm events; the extended runway base; and discussion of the approach lighting design to keep views from light sources to a minimum. Significant progress had been made on the grading for the south building area. This included shifting soil within the airport property to build up the level surface necessary for the future hangar area, and compacting gravel for the taxiways and alleyways. In addition, a new vehicle access road is being constructed to provide for safe transition of authorized vehicles around the airport without requiring the crossing of any runways. Finally, the commission inspected the relocated VOR facility located on MAC property east of Flying Cloud Drive. VII. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 3:50 p.m.
