III. New Business
A. Tria Mann, Arts and Special Events Coordinator, to discuss "DiverseCity on the
Prairie" event
and
B. Assignments for staffing August 13 "DiverseCity on the Prairie" event
Mann stated that "DiverseCity on the Prairie" is the final "wrap-up" event on the Staring
Lake Summer Concert Series schedule. This is the 6"' year of the annual event which
celebrates the unique composition of the community. Food and entertainment is used to
draw crowds. Typically, five or six Eden Prairie restaurants are showcased each year. Mann
passed out the planned entertainment schedule and pointed out each artist and their time
slots. She stated that this year there is a good variety of entertainment, with various cultures
and races, youth, dance and song. The event is free to the public, however there will be
small fees for food from vendors and beverages sold by Boy Scout troop 695. She noted that
in the past, one Boy Scout troop raised enough money to send 28 youths to camp.
Moran asked about the Commission's tent and handouts. Barone stated that there would be a
tent set up for this Commission and he will check on the handouts and voter registration
cards. Mann said she will handle the buttons. She also stated that there will be face painting

and Mehendi hand painting at the event. Mayor Jean Harris will make the welcoming
remarks to the audience and read the Human Rights Manifesto. She is seeking an emcee to
"fill in" between the entertainment groups. Barone stated that they are always seeking
culturally diverse entertainment acts for future years; suggestions can be given to Mann.
Moran said that the Commission needs to set up a shift schedule to sit at the tent. It was
agreed to have two shifts: 3:30 — 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 — 8:30 p.m. Barone said he would be
present the entire time. Stanton, Garcia and Fifield will take the first shift and Moran and
Young will work the second shift. Mann said that she and the Site Coordinator will be there
to assist in any way. Also, she said it would be a good idea if the members wanted to
slightly overlap their shifts to ensure coverage and extra help. If anyone would like to stay
late and help the crew "break down" the event, she said it would be greatly appreciated.
Break in meeting at 7:18 p.m. to take photograph of Commission members for Community
Newsletter.
Stanton stated that it was necessary for him to leave.
Meeting resumed at 7:22 p.m.
IV. Approval of Minutes for May 9th Human Rights & Diversity Citizen Advisory Commission
meeting
Young moved, seconded by Fifield to approve minutes from the May 9, 2000 meeting.
Motion carried, with Stanton abstaining because of absence from meeting.
V. Reports of Staff
A. South Hennepin Immigrant Services Group (SHISG)
Barone said he has included recent minutes from the South Hennepin Immigrant Services
Group meeting in the Agenda Packet. He did not attend the June meeting, so he did not have
those minutes. Moran asked what part the City has taken in this group. Barone stated that
this is an ad hoc group founded a year ago and that he is attending as a City staff member.
People primarily in the Human and Social Services areas in Eden Prairie participate. One of
the "hot topics" is meeting space, which has been requested by a number of the Social
Services groups working in Eden Prairie. Moran asked if the City will be giving the group a
room for their meetings. Barone said the City asked them to specifically detail their needs in
a letter. He hopes to have a response soon and will continue to attend the meetings and
report to this Commission.
B. Bias Crime Activity Status
Nothing new to report on this matter.
VI. Old Business
A. Report on Award presentation at May 16 City Council meeting and May 26 Eden
Prairie High School Awards ceremony

School students who were recipients of this year's Human Rights Youth Scholarship

the Human Rights Award for her accomplishments and great success story . He was thrilled
to see such a large turnout and at the end,he addressed and thanked the City Council.

Moran and Stanton attended the Eden Prairie High School award ceremony on May 25"'.
For the Human Rights Youth Scholarship Awards, Moran said that he read a statement
praising each of the recipients' accomplishments and Stanton presented the award placques.
They were third in line, ahead of a long list of awards given out to students that evening. The
diverse range of awards and scholarships (i.e. military, sports, academic) totaled an
impressive $2 million. Some students were called multiple times to receive awards.
Moran felt that the dollar amount of the Human Rights Youth Scholarship Award ($500)
"fell right in the middle of the pack" in comparison to the other awards.

• Commission members were reminded that meetings will not be held in July or August. The
next meeting is on Tuesday, September 12"'.
