HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuman Rights and Diversity - 04/13/2004 APPROVED MINUTES EDEN PRAIRIE HUMAN RIGHTS & DIVERSITY COMMISSION Tuesday,April 13, 2004 7:00 PM—Prairie Room, City Center 8080 Mitchell Road, Eden Prairie MN 55344-4485 Commission Members: Larry Piumbroeck (Chair), Jeff Strate (Vice Chair), Pamela Miller, Balu Iyer, Linda Chung, Gerry Beckmann, and Cari Maguire Student Representatives: Kian Missaghi, Molly Moroski, Jackie Beutell Commission Staff: Molly Koivumaki, Staff Liaison Tanya Whitsitt, Recording Secretary I. Roll Call The meeting was called at 7:05 pm. New members Chung and Miller were welcomed and each current member introduced themselves. II. Approval of Agenda Agenda was approved. III. Approval of Minutes from March Meeting Minutes were approved. IV. New Business A. Discussion and voting on Human Rights Awards The Commission members reviewed the nominations for this year's Human Rights Awards prior to the meeting. Two applications were submitted: the non-profit award—Eden Prairie School District Human Resources Department and the individual award—Jerry Anderson. Discussion of the non-profit category resulted in unanimous approval and recommendation to grant them a Human Rights Award. (Beckmann nominated Anderson and removed herself from the discussion and voting of this portion of the meeting.) The group discussed Anderson's achievements in the community as an executive at Cub Foods. It was also agreed to grant him a Human Rights Award. It was mentioned that both would receive their plaques and recognition from the City Council at their May 4"'meeting. V. Reports of Staff A. Human Services Review Committee (HSRC) Nothing to report. B. Bias Crime Activity Status Nothing to report. C. Discussion on Work Plan and upcoming events Topic Tabled. 1 VI. Old Business None. VII. Reports from Commission members A. South Hennepin Immigrant Services Group (SHISG) [to be added with notes from Commissioner Beckmann] B. Any Commission Member may report Maguire discussed Human Rights and Diversity Commission training available through the Minnesota League of Human Rights Commissions. VIII. Future Meetings/Events The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 11 at 8:00 p.m. IX. Adiourn The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:55 p.m. 2
