IV. OLD BUSINESS
Development of Arts Promotion Committee
Dickman and Werts met with Stuart Sudak and Marie Esch from the Eden Prairie News on
October 30 to discuss a possible article on the formation of an arts promotion committee.
Dickman gave Sudak a press release, however, it was not in the November 6 paper.
Dickman has talked with Jeanne Zetah from Community Education and Alissa LaSovage,
editor of the Eden Prairie Magazine, about serving on the Committee. Both were interested.
Birt suggested Lindsey Chen, the director of the Goldstein Gallery, who lives in Eden Prairie,
as a possible committee member. Dickman would like to begin meeting with the committee in
January, and is proposing four meetings.

Committee members believe that here is a lot of arts happening activity in Eden Prairie.
Dickman would like community members informed about what is going on in the schools; and
include information such as the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra Baroque series held at Wooddale
church. There could be a calendar of arts events, classes, music, ads for artists and more.
Dickman would like the Commission to figure out the parameters for the committee, with a
proposed outcome of an expanded arts promotion "vehicle" for the community.
The Commission will meet on Monday, December 8 at 7 pm to discuss this further.
Dickman would like definite names and contact information by the next meeting. Suggested
contacts:
Chamber or Rotary —Birt
Artist—Werts
Theater—Werts
Band—Werts
Goldstein Gallery —Birt
The first meeting of the Committee will be January 26, 2004
Krause suggested looking at minutes from last January. He recalls the Commission
brainstorming ideas on how to reach people.
Further discussion was tabled to December 8. Dickman asked Commissioners to bring to the
next meeting a list of questions of what information you would like to know from a focus
group.
Andrew Krause introduced himself at this time. He is a senior at Eden Prairie High School,
and is involved in music—piano and French horn. He is interested in school art causes and
how the school and community can collaborate.
V. NEW BUSINESS
A. Development of a Community Theater Advisory Committee
Werts reported that the Eden Prairie Community Theater is working on setting up an
advisory committee that would work with the theater productions. It would include
people involved in Community Theater, and people who have an interest in it,but do
not act, or serve as staff to the productions. Werts would like to have a liaison from the
Arts and Culture Commission on this Council.
Werts and two other members of the Community Theater are interviewing candidates

for producer tomorrow evening.
VI. REPORTS OF STAFF AND COMMISSIONERS
A. 2003 —2004 Goals
The Commission Goals as approved at the October 13 meeting are:
1. Develop a partnership with the School District to expand access to school
district facilities for community arts programming.
2. Establish a committee to develop all-inclusive arts promotion initiatives.
3. Have a workshop with the city Council to discuss arts and Culture in Eden
Prairie.
These will be included on each agenda instead of the Charter Statement
B. Meeting With City and School District Staff on Use of Performance Space
On October 30 Dickman, Werts and Laurie Obiazor, Recreation Manager, met with
Rolf Olson and Susie Sime from the EPHS drama department, Jill Johnson, EPHS
Facility Coordinator and Jeanne Zetah, Community Education Director to discuss the
City's use of EPHS performing space. What was learned is that there is a lot of
competition for the Auditorium and Performing Arts Center from the high school and
other schools within the district.
Dickman said she looked at referendum information and in the actual promotion pieces,
there is reference to the space for community use, if not being used by the school.
The City must pay the going rate for city programs. The School district cannot absorb
the cost. Currently the priority goes to the youth athletic associations over City
programs.
The high school has programmed in two weeks for the City to use the auditorium for the
winter play. There are very limited resources for building a set at the school.
At the School—Facilities Committee meeting earlier in October the question had been
asked about community members becoming involved in the high school drama
program. Sime and Olsen replied that they are preparing students to move on to take
roles in college or in the community, and if an adult came in to fill a role or position, it
would take away an opportunity from the students.
C. Art on City Walls—Current Exhibit
Werts invited the commission to come downstairs after the meeting and to see the

portrait watercolors of Arlene Flemmer and the photography of Cynthia Fleury.
D. Cemetery Walk Recap
Werts reported that the cemetery walk was wonderful. The maximum number of people
attended. The evening was beautiful. The only problem was that the bus was so late
coming, that she had to send the people on in cars to the cemeteries.
E. Report on Upcoming Events
1. Reviewed to Death—The show had its first week November 6,7, & 8 and
everything went well. The show sold out by the end of September, so little publicity
was done.
2. Cummins House Programs—The next program is the Cummins House Christmas.
Werts encouraged the Commission to volunteer to help with the event.
It will be held on Sunday, December 7.
