IV. OLD BUSINESS
A. Prepare Final Recommendation for Arts Promotion in Eden Prairie
Werts showed the Lakeville Area Arts Center Playbill, produced by the City of
Lakeville, which was paid for through the sale of advertising space.
Dickman distributed a publication she brought from California, showing arts
activities in the area, paid for through advertisements, and placed in various

locations for people to pick up. Olson brought the information flyer put out by the
Minnetonka Center for the Arts three times a year. The City of Edina's magazine
About Town was also circulated.
Werts said she had requested $8,000 in an updated 2004-2005 budget, which
would be sufficient to publish an arts publication but not to mail it out.
Werts reported that the editor of Eden Prairie Magazine has moved to Boston.
The new editor just arrived, and Werts said she doesn't know what their
relationship will be in terms of publishing information about City activities. She
also reported that Stuart Sudak, Eden Prairie News reporter, told her he is in the
process of redesigning the Arts & Culture page. He plans to write a small article
about a feature event every week. In addition, the City is putting out a monthly
newsletter to be distributed with the Eden Prairie News, beginning this
week. One side has City news and the other side is strictly news from the Parks
and Recreation Department, with a calendar of events.
Werts listed the items Commissioners had previously prioritized for action:
1. Theme or logo
2. Consistent identity
3. Develop small publication, directory or calendar
4. Attendance and punch card
5. Web site
It was agreed the Web site would support the publication, when that is available.
Mosow wondered if 1, 2, and 3 couldn't be one project. The publication should
have the logo on it. Styrlund said she is working with Scott Neal and a small
group on developing a theme or logo and a consistent identity for the City. She
has brought in a couple of people who work on branding at General Mills and
who live in Eden Prairie. They are going to meet with Neal again on June 21.
Mosow asked what process they are using. Styrlund replied they believe the
prairie look should be part of the emphasis, but that technology should also be
emphasized along with that. Styrlund said some logos she has thought about are
the eagle or prairie dog. The eagle is the high school's logo. Native American
culture could be incorporated. Eden Prairie Center has adopted the Frank Lloyd
Wright look, so that would be appropriate for the City to use.
She wondered how to tell the story about the arts community. Mosow said they
should act on what this community wants to become, what will draw people
together to form a unique community. One way of making that happen is
through the arts. Styrlund said the Commissioners should be a part of the
committee when it comes together because they would help to bring that vision
together. She said selection of a logo is long overdue; it should be done when a
city is created. This will require vision and commitment.

Olson said nomenclature could be part of the idea. She displayed a T-shirt she
has, with a quote from Chagall, "Great art picks up where nature ends."
Mosow suggested the Commission work on the development of a publication that
will tie into the planning that is going on to create an Eden Prairie identity, logo
and theme.
MOTION: Mosow moved, seconded by Styrlund, that the priority of the
Commission is to work on the development of a small publication or a
communication tool in preparation for the City's decision regarding a complete
identity program. Motion carried 6-0.
There was discussion about the type of publication to use. The consensus was
That it should be user-friendly. Dickman said the initial publication may not have
everything in it they hope for,but it should be appealing enough to the arts
community so all of them would want to be included in the next issue. She
recommended the advertising be arts-related, so even that would be interesting to
the reader. It was agreed that making the publication available at locations where
it could be picked up would be preferable to mailing it out because of the cost
involved and the resources available from the City.
Werts said that Todd Pernsteiner is interested in helping to put this publication
together. He has been on the Commission and knows what the Commissioners
have been discussing. His expertise will be welcomed.
There was consensus: (1) that the publication should come out on a quarterly
Basis according to the seasons. (2) To the extent possible, there would be a
standard schedule of events in each issue, and inserts could be used for seasonal
changes in program schedules. It would be paid for by organizations advertising
in each issue, so it would not be necessary to go back to them every quarter. (3)
The publication would have information about as many performing and visual arts
organizations in Eden Prairie as the Commission can identify. (4) The advertising
should be targeted to arts and cultural opportunities in the area, and include ads
telling where a person can call for full information about events.
It was decided to find out what arts businesses are located in Eden Prairie by
having all Commissioners write down the names, addresses and phone numbers of
local businesses connected with the arts, including dance, theater, music, painting,
sculpture, stained glass, weaving, woodworking, fabric design, interior design,
photography, film-making, Web design,jewelry-making, glass-blowing, poetry,
wine-making, movie theaters, cooking, memory-book making, quilting, needle
arts, building design, architecture, landscape architecture, cabinetry, art supply
stores, calligraphy, tattoo parlors, body-piercing, woodcarving, bands and vocal
groups, art galleries, "Taste of Eden Prairie", "Art on City Walls", "Art at Eden
Prairie Center", Coffee Oasis, Dunn Bros. Coffee, Ukrainian egg decoration,

welding and metal stamping, henna art, pottery, History Museum, and Historical
Society.
Werts will e-mail this list to the Commissioners. They could then e-mail it to
friends and ask them for names of businesses and to send the list to anyone they
know in Eden Prairie. The Commissioners will report their results at the next
meeting.
Olson inquired if the publication would have editorial content. Werts said Renee
Stewart, who writes for the Eden Prairie News, would probably write an article
for it. The City has been paying her$75 to write articles about what is happening
in the Parks and Recreation Department each month. Krause suggested having an
"artist of the month" featured in each issue. Perhaps a volunteer writer could be
found.
The target date for publication is January 2005.
