HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 90-279 - Reconstructing the Roadside Marker Designating the Site of "The Battle of Shakopee" - 12/18/1990 CITY OF EDEN PRAIRIE ]HENNEPIN COUNTY, DIINNESOTA RESOLUTION NO. 90-279 RESOLUTION RECONSTRUCTING TBE ROADSIDE MARIKER DESIGNATING TEE SITE OF "THE BATTLE OF SHAKOPEE" WHEREAS, the City Council of Eden Prairie has established the Historical and Cultural Commission and the Heritage Preservation Committee to be advisors to the Council on matters of historical sites in the City, and WHEREAS, the Heritage Preservation Committee was advised that a sign designating the site of the last battle between the Sioux and the Chippewa in Minnesota had been removed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation during construction of the highway and had never been replaced, and WHEREAS, the Heritage Preservation Committee and the Eden Prairie Historical Society have researched the previous placement and history of the Historic Marker that designated the site of the "Battle of Shakopee" that was located on the south side of State Highway 169/212 between Eden Prairie Road and the "Kano" barn, and WHEREAS, this site and battle had a major impact on the history of Eden Prairie relating the context of events during the middle 1800's when a transition between the settlement of Native American and white people occurred in the area, and WHEREAS, preservation and designation of this site would assist in the interpretation of Eden Prairie's history to its citizens and those passing the site on State Highway 169/212, and WHEREAS, the Minnesota Department of Transportation owns the right-of-way along Highway 169/212. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Historical and Cultural Commission and the Heritage Preservation Committee of Eden Prairie respectfully request the City Council to ask the Minnesota Department of Transportation to reestablish the marker that designates the site of the 'Battle of Shakopee", and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Minnesota Department of Transportation be requested to seek the assistance of the Minnesota Historical Society, the Eden Prairie Historical Society and the Eden Prairie Heritage Preservation Committee in the placement and narrative of the historic marker.
