CITY CENTER 8080 MITCHELL RD HPC COMMISSION MEMBERS: Steve Olson-Chair; Tara Kalar-Vice Chair; Pamela Spera; Valerie Ross; Paul Thorp; Shanti Shah; Cheryl Kessler COMMISSION STAFF: Lori Creamer, Staff Liaison Kristin Harley, Recording Secretary I. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL Vice Chair Kalar called the meeting to order at 7:52 p.m. Absent was commission member Olson. Eden Prairie resident Rowan Kalar joined the meeting. II. APPROVAL OF AGENDA MOTION: Shah moved, seconded by Kessler to approve the agenda. Motion carried 6- 0. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOTION: Thorp moved, seconded by Kessler to approve the minutes of the June 18, 2019 meeting. Motion carried 6-0. IV. NEW BUSINESS A. PUBLIC HEARING – C.O.A. CAMP EDEN WOOD LION’S DEN The proponent Connor McGrath was unable to attend the meeting. MOTION: Shah moved, seconded by Ross to continue the public hearing to the August 19, 2019 meeting. Motion carried 6-0. V. NEW BUSINESS A. PEOPLEFEST UPDATE Shah stated the committee met last Thursday and all events were set. There would be one more meeting before the event. Communication and marketing remained HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION July 15, 2019 Page 2 the final tasks. There would be 18 booths including the commission’s, bus tours, and education events/arts and crafts all week. Funding was provided from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Shah offered to send the link to register for Indian Fest. Discussion followed on borrowing a tent. Kessler displayed the smaller and the larger inflated globes on which visitors could draw their paths to the U.S. She invited all commission members to do so tonight. Kessler and Thorp displayed the laminated maps showing Eden Prairie at different times in history. Kessler also displayed the family trees of prominent Eden Prairie families for display and a directory of the descendants of the Severin family. B. FALL HARVEST CELEBRATION Ross stated she had no updates. She suggested using some of these maps and Thorp stated hanging them in the tent as with Peoplefest might be best. Discussion followed on using dots or pens on the laminated maps. Traditional games outside of Cummins House would be provided and run Stan Tekiela at the Outdoor Center. Ross planned to create a history hunt using signs developed by the HPC. There would be traditional candy sticks and a drawing to win an afghan donated by the Historical Society. The Dorenkemper House will be open for tours. The City was also holding events such as pumpkin decorating, a photo booth, and two bouncy houses, horse-and-carriage rides, and craft stations. Ross called for HPC volunteers to arrive in dress. VI. REPORTS OF STUDENTS VII. REPORTS OF COMMISSION AND STAFF A. 2019 STATEWIDE HISTORIC PRESERVATION CONFERENCE Creamer distributed flyers and announced the conference would be held September 11-13, 2019 in St. Cloud. She encouraged commission members who were interested in attending to sign up early. Registration, travel, and lodging were covered, meals are reimbursed per diem, and the City has received grant funds to defray the cost in the past and would anticipate that would be the case for this year. VII. REPORTS OF HISTORICAL SOCIETY Thorp stated the Society was approached by Wings of the North Museum to work on an exhibit with them on military history and history of the airport. He was working on a chronology of the history of the land at the airport. The exhibit would be held at their HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION July 15, 2019 Page 3 museum. The Historical Society meeting was Thursday. Kessler described the historical exhibit at Eden Prairie Mall. VIII. FYI ITEMS A. GRANT APPLICATION FOR CUMMINS HOUSE UPSTAIRS WORK Creamer provided an update on the status of the grant application for 2019. The preapplication was due July 26, 2019 with a final application due in September. The awards would be announced later this year, probably November. Discussion followed on timelines. Creamer explained if for some reason work was not completed by the stated deadline this merely needed to be reported to the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). B. COUNCIL WORKSHOP – JOINT MEETIG WITH HISTORICAL SOCIETY/HPC TUESDAY, AUGUST 13, 2019 5:00 P.M. Creamer announced the joint workshop and invited the commission members to attend. Dinner would be at 5:00 p.m. and the meeting would begin at 5:30 p.m. IX NEXT MEETING The next HPC meeting will be held on Monday, August 19 at 7:00 p.m. in Prairie Rooms A & B. X. ADJOURNMENT MOTION: Shah moved, seconded by Kessler to adjourn. Motion carried 6-0. The meeting was adjourned at 8:04 p.m.
