NEXT MEETING October 16, 2023 (Joint meeting with HRDC and Presentation by Margaret Plank) UNAPPROVED MINUTES EDEN PRAIRIE HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION MONDAY, AUGUST 21, 2023 7:00 P.M. Meeting Heritage Rooms, City Hall HPC COMMISSION MEMBERS: Steve Schumacher (Chair); Paul Thorp (Vice-Chair); Rod Fisher; George Maxwell; Robert Bowes; Andy Ludowese; Melanie Willett; Catherine Lau COMMISSION STAFF: Beth Novak-Krebs, Staff Liaison Kristin Harley, Recording Secretary I. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL Chair Schumacher called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. All commission members were present. II. READING OF LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT STATEMENT Fisher read the land acknowledgement statement. III. APPROVAL OF AGENDA MOTION: Maxwell moved, seconded by Bowes to approve the agenda. Motion carried 8-0. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOTION: Maxwell moved, seconded by Bowes to approve the minutes of the July 24, 2023 minutes to correct typos of personal names. Motion carried 8-0. V. NEW BUSINESS A. PRESERVE MINNESOTA CONFERENCE IN MANKATO (NOVAK- KREBS) Novak-Krebs explained the annual conference would be help September 27-29. At least one person had to attend to keep the Certified Local Government (CLG) status, and if no one could attend Novak-Krebs would. Lau stated she could go next year. Ludowese said he would consider going. B. DISCUSS CITYWIDE OPEN HOUSE (NOVAK-KREBS) EDEN PRAIRIE HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION July 24, 2023 Page 2 Novak-Krebs stated this would be held October 7 at City Hall, and asked if the commission wished to have a table. She did not yet know if it was inside or outside. Thorp and Bowes volunteered to staff a table. Discussion followed on possible display items such as maps, prints and overlays. They also plan to sell street signs. C. DISCUSS HARVEST TO HALLOWEEN AT THE BARN (NOVAK- KREBS) Novak-Krebs stated this would be held October 14, and the HPC and the Historical Society would be giving tours of the Dorenkemper House. She explained the event for the new commission members. Discussion followed on selling signs at this event via QR code but also having physical examples. VI. OLD BUSINESS A. DISCUSS SUBCOMMITTEES (THORP) Novak-Krebs displayed a slide listing the subcommittees and Schumacher asked for feedback. The commission chose the existing subcommittees as presented. Schumacher outlined the process for subcommittee meetings and reports. Commission members volunteered for the various subcommittees, and Schumacher took names: Native American History/Outreach • Rod Fisher • Andy Ludowese • Melanie Willett New HPC Site Designation • Paul Thorp • Cathy Lau • George Maxwell Renovation/Maintenance/Development • Steve Schumacher • Robert Bowes • Andy Ludowese Documentation/Historical Recordings/Outreach • Steve Schumacher • George Maxwell Discussion followed on specific projects. Novak-Krebs reminded the commission members of the suggestion of a videotaped tour of Dorenkemper House and other sites with the idea that they could be posted on the website. EDEN PRAIRIE HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION July 24, 2023 Page 3 Schumacher noted the student representatives would begin at the next meeting and stated these committees were an opportunity for them. Novak-Krebs offered to send out the list of email addresses. B. DISCUSS HERITAGE SITE PLAQUE PROGRAM (NOVAK-KREBS) Novak-Krebs stated the most current application had been emailed. She stated this had been revised in 2014 and could be revised again. She had spoken to Kathie Case, who wished to be involved in any revisions. Case was doing an inventory of which plaques needed to be replaced. Thorp asked for the lead time for ordering new ones and Novak-Krebs stated she did not yet have that information. Novak- Krebs displayed the application in a Word document and asked for feedback. Lau asked for and received confirmation these applications would come before the commission for discussion and approval. Schumacher asked for and received confirmation there was a list of existing plaque holders. Discussion followed on making this list available online. The commission decided to retain the criteria as revised in 2014. Fisher asked for and received clarification the current list was not made public. Novak-Krebs confirmed that the current list has never been made public. Novak-Krebs stated there would be a tour of the Eden Prairie Cemetery with Jay Lotthammer and Matthew Bourne, and a discussion of the cemetery recordkeeping database. She suggested meeting at the City Hall at 6:00 p.m. on September 18 for the tour, then convene back at City Hall at 7:00 p.m. for the meeting. Novak-Krebs added that at the commission meeting on October 16, Margaret Plank, the daughter of Agnes Deluge would give a Zoom presentation. This was the joint meeting with Human Rights and Diversity Commission. VII. REPORTS OF COMMISSION AND STAFF VIII. REPORTS OF HISTORICAL SOCIETY Bowes and Thorp presented the upcoming events: October 14 Harvest Fest October 21 Ghost Walk Cummins Phipps Grill House Vintage Sale November 10 and 11 EDEN PRAIRIE HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION July 24, 2023 Page 4 Boy Scouts would sell trees at Cummins instead of Optimists’ Club. There would be a new Santa to replace the volunteer who had retired. IX. FYI ITEMS X NEXT MEETING The next HPC meeting will be held on Monday, September 18, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. in the Heritage Room. The commission will meet at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall for the Eden Prairie Cemetery tour. XI. ADJOURNMENT MOTION: Maxwell moved, seconded by Bowes to adjourn. Motion carried 8-0. The meeting was adjourned at 7:43 p.m. XII. ADJOURNMENT
