HomeMy WebLinkAboutHeritage Preservation - 08/15/2022APPROVED MINUTES EDEN PRAIRIE HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION TUESDAY, AUGUST 15, 2022 7:00 P.M. 8080 MITCHELL RD HPC COMMISSION MEMBERS: Rod Fisher (Chair); Paul Thorp (Vice- Chair); George Maxwell; Steve Schumacher; Robert Bowes; Andrew Scipioni; Andy Ludowese COMMISSION STAFF: Beth Novak-Krebs, Staff Liaison Kristin Harley, Recording Secretary I. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL Chair Fisher called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Carol Kissner and Claude Buettner, residents, joined the meeting. II. READING OF LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT STATEMENT Fisher read the land acknowledgement statement. III. APPROVAL OF AGENDA MOTION: Schumacher moved, seconded by Scipioni to approve the agenda. Motion carried 7-0. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOTION: Scipioni moved, seconded by Maxwell to approve the minutes of the July 18, 2022, minutes. Motion carried 7-0. V. NEW BUSINESS Carol Kissner asked the exact location of the Red Rock. Bowes replied Kathie Case would know. Discussion followed on the status of the Flying Red Horse. Novak-Krebs offered to contact Jay Lotthammer again. Thorp stated he spoke with Kathie Case regarding the repairs True Friends were making at Camp Eden Wood and she had suggested they pursue grants to help EDEN PRAIRIE HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION August 15, 2022 Page 2 with the work. Apparently, the house undergoing repair needed more work than anticipated. VI. OLD BUSINESS A. DISCUSS ANY INFORMATION OR RESEARCH GATHERED FOR THE MINNESOTA RIVER VALLEY (NOVAK-KREBS AND OTHERS Fisher stated he had contacted Steve Olson, former chair of the HPC, who gave him contact information for the Executive Director of the Indian Affairs Council, whose job was to help the state interface with projects that touch on indigenous heritage and land. Thorp stated there was a property purchased in 1871 which had been taken from an indigenous family. Fisher stated he had also contacted the Indian Affairs Cultural Resources Officer. He added the Bloomington Historical Society had a good presentation of indigenous history. He suggested a visit to the museum. Thorp offered to reach out again to his contact at Three Rivers. Scipioni stated he reached out to the Scott County Historical Society and the Shakopee Historical Society. Bowes announced the free Mystic Lake Wacipi, or traditional Native American gathering would be held this Friday (7:00 p.m.), Saturday (1:00 and 7:00 p.m.), and Sunday (7:00 p.m.). He commended the tribe’s website. Also, Native American Heritage month was in November, with Native American Heritage Day being held the day after Thanksgiving. He also suggested a visit to the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) Cultural Center. Fisher recommended two books on Minnesota indigenous history: North Country: the Making of Minnesota by Mary Lethert Wingerd, and Mni Sota Makoce: The Land of the Dakota by Gwen Westerman and Bruce White. He offered to lend the books to the other commissioners. Novak-Krebs offered to contact David Mather regarding a presentation to the commission and discussing the history along the river valley. B. DISCUSS INTERVIEWS RELATED TO DEVELOPMENT AND THE 1968 COMPREHENSIVE PLAN. DISCUSS DETAILS SUCH AS OUTREACH, TIMING, PARTICIPATION ETC (NOVAK-KREBS) Novak-Krebs gave the following list of interviewees: David Lindahl Paul Thorp Dean Edstrom Siever Peterson EDEN PRAIRIE HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION August 15, 2022 Page 3 Richard Putnam Roy Terwilliger Novak-Krebs offered to conduct the interviews. Thorp suggested they be conducted at the museum. Novak-Krebs stated they would be held in late September or early October. Maxwell asked if the information gathered at the interviews could be cumulative. Discussion followed on the success of the previous set of interviews. Discussion followed on the attempts to involve the high school spreading the word about the oral histories. Carol Kissner suggested the 4-H Club. Maxwell suggested contacting a history teacher at the school. C. THE OLD DEPOT SITE AND NEXT STEPS (THORP) Thorp stated the commission needed buy-in from Three Rivers Parks and needed permission from Hennepin County Rail Authority. He suggested the commission members visit the site. Thorp stated the interpretive sign would soon be displayed; it was presently being stored inside the door. Novak-Krebs offered to follow up with Rick Whalen VII. REPORTS OF COMMISSION AND STAFF VIII. REPORTS OF HISTORICAL SOCIETY Thorp announced there would be a meeting this Thursday. The painting and roof repairs on the Cummins Phipps Grill House were completed. Bowes added the Eden Prairie Remembers site numbers were up to 850 members. Thorp added the Ghost Walk and the Calico Ball were possibilities for this year. The Harvest Fest would be held October 15 at the Dorenkemper House. Novak- Krebs stated she suggested a video tour of the Dorenkemper House to Kathie Case and was waiting to hear; she offered to contact Case again. IX. FYI ITEMS Fisher reiterated the free Mystic Lake Wacipi, or traditional Native American gathering held this Friday (7:00 p.m.), Saturday (1:00 and 7:00 p.m.), and Sunday (7:00 p.m.). X NEXT MEETING The next HPC meeting will be held on Monday, September 19, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. in the Heritage Room. EDEN PRAIRIE HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION August 15, 2022 Page 4 XI. ADJOURNMENT MOTION: Maxwell moved, seconded by Bowes to adjourn. Motion carried 7-0. The meeting was adjourned at 7:43 p.m.
